About the Breed

While there is no proof, it is thought that the beautiful Egyptian Mau may go back to the time of the Pharaohs. The Egyptian Mau is the only naturally occurring spotted domestic cat. Not only is the fur spotted but also the skin. The Mau has been used in selective breeding programs to produce other spotted varities of cat.

GCCF, TICA and the CFA recognise three colours in the breed for showing, Bronze, Smoke and Silver. More details for show standards can be found at the bottom of this page. Tabby, black and blue cats can also occur and although they can not be shown they are beautiful and still make wonderful pets.

The Mau is an extremely elegant cat which moves with the grace of a cheetah. They are fast and are said to be able to run at 30 mph. They are able to leap six to seven feet in the air. They are very muscular and appear to be much lighter than they are, people are often surprised by the weight when they first pick a Mau up. The Mau has a very characteristic worried look to his face. With it's spots, facial markings and leg stripes the Mau is a beautiful and striking cat to look at.

Maus love to be around their owners and can be very loyal, sometimes bonding more strongly with one member of the family. They are good with other pets and children. Maus are fairly active cats and enjoy a game with each other or their owners. Some Maus learn to retrieve toys. A Mau will also bring a favourite toy to its owner to play. They are vocal cats making chirruping and chortling sounds of a wide variety as well as a more normal meow. Your Mau may well greet you at the door on your return home with vocal sounds, a wriggly tail and treading his front paws, delighted to see you back home. The Mau is an intelligent cat and will soon learn certain words such as food, toys and no. They can also learn to open doors and turn on some types of tap. They can be wilful and independent. Maus also love food so it is important to ensure that they exercise well and are fed carefully. The average weight of a male is 4-6 kilos and female 3-4.

Due to the striking appearance of a Mau it is a good idea to keep them indoors or allow access to the outside world in a pen. They are happy to be kept in this type of environment, providing their owner spends time playing with them and they can see activities going on outside windows, such as birds feeding.

The "modern" Egyptian Mau was imported into America by the Russian princess Nathalie Troubtskoy in 1956. They received recognition to full championship level by CFA in 1977. The first Egyptian Maus to arrive in the United Kingdom were imported by Dr Melissa Bateson in late 1998. Dr Bateson and members of the Egyptian Mau club worked hard to ensure that the breed obtained recognition by the GCCF. The Mau achieved Preliminary status and after the required number of cats received Merits were promoted to Provisional status and finally in June 2007 the breed received full Championship status with GCCF. The Egyptian Mau has been fully recognised by other bodies for showing in the UK for longer. The Pyramid Club owes a debt of gratitude to Dr Melissa Bateson for bringing these stunning cats to the UK and to the early committee members for their hard work and dedication to the breed.
